Copper & Fiber Cabling Systems
3M Telecommunications provides copper and fiber optic cabling systems or a combination of both. The unique fiber cabling system provides freedom of choice in the design and optimization of the overall network architecture. The state-of-the-art voice and data Copper Cabling Systems include a Category 6 offering with significant channel performance headroom over existing standards helping a broad range of customers to migrate to a higher bandwidth.
Both cabling systems meet or exceed the requirements of ANSI/TIA/EIA 568, ISO/IEC 11801 and EN50173 structured cabling standards. They also meet the physical layer requirements defined by IEEE 802.3, Fiber Channel, and the ATM Forum. Both systems include easy-to-install and innovative connectivity solutions ensuring high performance and long-term reliability. The revolutionary 3MVolition VF-45 small form factor fiber connector has helped in reducing the complexity of fiber networking, while the Volition RJ-45 K5e and K6 jacks offer simple Termination solutions jacks that snap on without tools with built-in reliability and flexibility features and component performance exceeding existing standards.
The Volition VF-45 fiber optic connector is specified by Fiber Channel and the ATM Forum that are standardized by ANSI/TIA/EIA, IEC, and CENELEC as a small form factor (SFF) connector where it is given the designation SG.
All Volition products are produced in strict compliance with ISO 9001/14001 granted an extended 20-year guarantee if certain conditions are fulfilled.
Networking Hardware and Test and Measurement.
A range of enabling networking hardware (media converters, switches, and network interface cards) is available with the Volition VF-45 interface. Also included is test and measurement equipment, which transforms the system into a cost-effective and comprehensive solution. CAT5, CAT5e, CAT6, CAT6A ,CAT7 Cables
Up until the late 1980s thick or thin coaxial cable was typically used for 10-Mbps Ethernet networks, but around that time, UTP cabling became more commonly used because it was easier and less expensive to install.
UTP CAT3 and CAT4 were used for a quite limited time since the emergence of 100Base-TX networks meant a quick shift to CAT5. By the year 2000, moves to gigabit (1000Base-TX) Ethernet LANs created a need for another specification, CAT5e that is now being superseded by CAT6 and CAT7 cables.
CAT-7, Category 7 cable
Category 7 cable (CAT7), (ISO/IEC 11801:2002 category 7/class F), is a cable standard for Ultra Fast Ethernet and other interconnect technologies that can be made to be backwards compatible with traditional CAT5 and CAT6 Ethernet cable. CAT7 features even more stringent specifications for crosstalk and system noise then CAT6. To achieve this, shielding has been added for individual wire pairs and the cable as a whole.
The CAT7 cable standard has been created to allow 10-gigabit Ethernet over 100 m of copper cabling. The cable contains four twisted copper wire pairs, just like the earlier standards. CAT7 can be terminated in RJ-45 compatible GG45 electrical connectors which incorporate the RJ-45 standard, and a new type of connection to enable a smoother migration to the new standard. When combined with GG-45 connectors, CAT7 cable is rated for transmission frequencies of up to
600 MHz
Fiber Splicing Machines
The process of fusion splicing involves using localized heat to melt or fuse the ends of two optical fibers together. The splicing process begins by preparing each fiber end for fusion. Fusion splicing requires that all protective coatings be removed from the ends of each fiber. The fiber is then cleaved using the score-and-break method. The quality of each fiber end is inspected using a microscope. In fusion splicing, splice loss is a direct function of the angles and quality of the two fiber-end faces.
